DoLive Shad
ドライブシャッド
A Japanese shad-tail soft bait designed to keep swimming even on the fall. The original 4.5-inch DoLive Shad combines a lively retrieve action with a self-swimming free fall, allowing anglers to alternate between horizontal swimming and vertical falling presentations.

What is the DoLive Shad?
The DoLive Shad is a shad-tail soft plastic from O.S.P, with the original 4.5-inch model released in Japan in September 2014.
Its defining feature is its action during the fall.
Many shad-tail worms produce their strongest action while being retrieved but become relatively inactive when the retrieve stops. O.S.P designed the DoLive Shad to continue moving during a free fall, with the body undulating and the tail continuing to kick as the bait sinks.
This allows the 4.5-inch DoLive Shad to transition naturally between swimming and falling without requiring the angler to switch presentations.
It can be fished weightless, on a Texas rig, as a jig trailer, or behind a bladed jig.
Why it's popular in Japan
The DoLive Shad addresses a common problem in shad-tail fishing: what happens when the retrieve stops.
Instead of treating the fall as a dead period between swimming presentations, O.S.P designed the bait so that the fall itself becomes another opportunity to trigger a bite.
This is particularly useful in Japanese bass fishing, where an angler may cast beside cover, allow the bait to fall, begin a steady retrieve, and then deliberately stop it again when a following bass refuses to commit.
The 4.5-inch model is versatile enough to be fished weightless or adapted to several other rigs, allowing the same bait to cover both horizontal swimming and more cover-oriented presentations.
How Japanese anglers fish it
One of the most characteristic ways to fish the DoLive Shad 4.5" is weightless.
On a steady retrieve, the bait produces a wobbling and rolling action. It continues to move at slow retrieve speeds and remains stable when retrieved quickly.
The retrieve can then be stopped deliberately, allowing the bait to transition into its self-swimming fall. Alternating between swimming and falling is one of the key presentations for the DoLive Shad.
A light Texas rig of around 1.8 g can be used when fishing around cover while retaining both swimming and falling action.
The 4.5-inch model also works as a trailer for football and swimming jigs, including the Japanese "scone rig" presentation, and as a trailer for bladed jigs.
Recommended situations
- Weightless shad-tail fishing
- Swim-and-fall presentations
- Bass following a bait without committing
- Fishing beside cover
- Slow to fast steady retrieves
- Light Texas rigs
- Swimming jig and football jig trailers
- Scone rig presentations
- Bladed jig trailers
- Situations where both horizontal and vertical presentations are needed
How it differs from US-market lures
The DoLive Shad will look familiar to US anglers as a paddle-tail soft plastic, but its design concept places unusual emphasis on what the bait does after the retrieve stops.
Rather than using the tail primarily for horizontal swimming, O.S.P designed the body and tail to continue producing action during a free fall.
This makes the transition between retrieve and fall an intentional part of the presentation.
The original 4.5-inch model is also designed to work across several presentations, from weightless swimming and light Texas rigs to swimming jigs, the Japanese scone rig, and bladed-jig trailers.
For anglers exploring JDM soft plastics, the DoLive Shad is a useful example of a bait designed around both horizontal swimming and vertical falling action.
