β-MINNOW

A modular 95 mm floating minnow from TTT designed to bring darting jerkbait action into cover. The β-MINNOW combines a replaceable internal FRAME, flexible SKIN, BODY, and JOINT system to balance obstacle avoidance, hooking performance, and customizable action.

What is the β-MINNOW?

The β-MINNOW is a modular floating minnow developed by Japanese lure manufacturer TTT around an unusual concept: making a minnow capable of darting inside and around cover.

Unlike a conventional hard-bodied minnow built as a single fixed structure, the β-MINNOW consists of four separate components: BODY, FRAME, SKIN, and JOINT. Each component can be separated and replaced.

The lure combines a rigid internal structure with flexible elastomer components to improve its ability to move through obstacles while maintaining effective hooking performance.

With the standard FRAME, rod movements make the lure twist and dart in a controlled pattern. During a steady retrieve, vibration generated by the lip combines with the natural movement of the flexible SKIN.

This modular construction also allows the lure's characteristics to be changed without replacing the entire bait.

Why it's popular in Japan

The β-MINNOW represents an experimental side of modern Japanese lure design.

Rather than developing another conventional minnow, TTT focused on the difficult combination of darting action, obstacle avoidance, and hooking performance around cover.

Its modular construction is a major part of that approach. The BODY, FRAME, SKIN, and JOINT can be separated, allowing individual components to perform different mechanical roles and be replaced when necessary.

The concept can also be customized. The standard FRAME emphasizes darting action, while an optional Reeling Custom FRAME shifts the lure toward steady-retrieve performance.

This ability to alter the behavior of the same lure through interchangeable structural components makes the β-MINNOW particularly interesting as an example of a new generation of Japanese lure development.

How Japanese anglers fish it

The standard β-MINNOW is designed primarily around rod-work presentations.

Short rod movements make the lure twist and dart, allowing anglers to work it around cover where a conventional exposed-hook minnow may be difficult to use confidently.

The lure can also be fished with a steady retrieve. Its lip generates vibration while the flexible SKIN adds natural movement to the presentation.

TTT also offers a Reeling Custom FRAME that changes the emphasis from darting action to steady-retrieve performance.

Additional customization is possible with adhesive weights placed on the belly. By adjusting the lure's weight, anglers can make the floating β-MINNOW suspend or use it for bottom-oriented jerking presentations.

A Rattle IN version is also available for anglers who want additional sound and presence.

Recommended situations

  • Jerkbait fishing around cover
  • Wood and shoreline cover
  • Vegetation edges
  • Reaction bites
  • Darting presentations
  • Steady retrieves
  • Shallow-water bass
  • Situations where conventional treble-hook minnows are difficult to fish
  • Customizable lure presentations
  • Suspended presentations with added weight
  • Bottom jerking with added weight

How it differs from US-market lures

The most unusual aspect of the β-MINNOW is not simply its action, but its modular construction.

Most minnows and jerkbaits are designed as fixed bodies. The β-MINNOW separates the lure into BODY, FRAME, SKIN, and JOINT components, allowing different materials and structures to perform specific functions.

The flexible SKIN helps the lure interact with cover, while the internal FRAME provides structural control. Individual components can also be replaced or changed to alter the lure's behavior.

For example, switching from the standard FRAME to the optional Reeling Custom FRAME changes the emphasis from darting rod-work presentations toward steady retrieving.

For US anglers, the β-MINNOW offers an interesting example of contemporary JDM engineering: instead of creating separate fixed lures for different actions, TTT has designed a platform whose behavior can be modified through interchangeable components.
