Nail Rig
ネイルリグ· Nail Weight Rig, Nail Sinker Rig· Intermediate
A soft-plastic rig that uses a small nail-shaped weight inserted directly into the bait to adjust its fall rate, balance, posture, and action without adding an external sinker.
The Nail Rig is a soft-plastic rigging concept that uses a small nail-shaped sinker inserted directly into the body of the lure.
Unlike rigs that place a sinker on the line or outside the bait, the Nail Rig keeps the added weight inside the soft plastic. This allows anglers to change the lure's fall rate and balance while maintaining a relatively clean external profile.
Where the nail weight is inserted is particularly important.
Placing the weight toward the head can create a head-first fall or make it easier to reach deeper water. Moving the weight to another part of the body can shift the lure's center of gravity and produce very different actions, including horizontal falls, rolling movements, or backward glides.
This makes the Nail Rig less of a single fixed presentation and more of a tuning method.
Japanese anglers often experiment with very small differences in nail-weight size and placement to control exactly how a soft plastic behaves. This is especially useful with specialized JDM soft plastics whose shapes are designed to respond strongly to changes in balance.
The Nail Rig should not be confused with the Neko Rig. A Neko Rig normally uses a nail weight in one end of a worm together with a hook placed farther back in the body, creating its characteristic posture and action. Nail Rig is the broader concept of inserting a nail weight into a soft plastic, and it can be applied to many different lure shapes and rigging styles.
Lures such as the HIDEUP Coike series can be fished with nail weights to take advantage of their unusual body shapes and appendages, making Nail Rig an important technique for understanding some modern Japanese soft-plastic presentations.
Lures for Nail Rig

BASSWORM 145
バスワーム145
A highly unconventional 145 mm soft plastic from IMAKATSU designed to imitate a juvenile bass rather than conventional forage. Its asymmetrical body slit creates a struggling action intended to resemble a small bass desperately trying to escape into cover.

Coike 17mm
コイケ17mm
A highly distinctive Japanese soft plastic from HIDEUP built around a compact 17 mm body surrounded by numerous flexible strands. The Coike 17mm creates subtle movement and water displacement from every direction, making it especially interesting for weightless and nail-weight presentations.
