Lift & Fall

Lift & Fall is a fundamental technique for fishing sinking lures through different depths of the water column.

After allowing the lure to reach the desired depth, the angler raises the rod or reels to lift the lure upward. The lure is then allowed to fall before the next lift.

The two parts of the presentation can produce very different actions.

During the lift, vibration baits, blade baits, and other reactive lures often produce strong vibration, flash, or rapid movement.

During the fall, the lure may drop vertically, follow a curved path, slide sideways, shimmy, or continue producing flash depending on its design and the amount of line tension.

Line control is therefore an important part of the technique.

Maintaining tension during the fall generally gives the angler more control over the lure's path, while releasing tension can create a faster or less predictable fall. Different lures respond differently to these changes.

Lift height and rhythm can also be adjusted. Short lifts keep the lure within a relatively narrow strike zone, while larger lifts search a greater vertical range.

Japanese bass anglers use Lift & Fall with many types of sinking lures, particularly during periods when bass are positioned near the bottom or suspended at a specific depth.
